As i have mentioned here [link] my new cosplay surprise is MULAN!!!!!!!
WOOHOOO
in 1998, Disney's Mulan came out. Being only in 1st grade (age 7/8), i fangirled over her. I vaguely remember drawing her a lot but cant seem to find the drawings anymore. I begged Mom (who wasnt a really good seamstress) to make me a Mulan costume since she didnt want to go to the store and buy one. (she made my sister one too but of a different ribbon)
Apparently it didnt really look like Disney's Mulan. It just looks like some randomly put together costume. I remember i had a classmate who bought the store version and no one believed me when i said i was mulan (due to the colors and design that mom did)
SOOOOO after nearly 13 years later, i decided to make an accurate one and relive my mulan dream.
But did u guys know Disney's Mulan is really historically inaccurate? i'm of Chinese descent and yea, in some ways it is. The thing that bothers me the most is the face paint. It looked too much like Japanese Geishas whereas the real version of Chinese make up is just light foundation powder, not white white ghostly white makeup. heres some extra info from another dA artist: [link]
Q: Why is mulan a Disney princess? i personally don't consider her a Disney princess because she has no official Princess title in her movie. Disney calls her an "honorary princess", which makes more sense instead of jus "princess mulan". Honorary because in the context of her movie, she had the Emperor bow before her. She has been acknowledged as a warrior by him. Honorary person. MAJOR status upgrade and respect in terms of feudal China.
Wow, you've been doing cosplay since a child?! good to know mulan is a "onorary princess" she is one of my favorite disney character too!! for the make up... cus mulan is a very ancient character, I also believe that the age she lived face painting is not popular. here is a movie poster of mulan, maybe could be a reference [link][link] Can't wait to see your cosplay!!
no i havent. it was just a regular halloween costume. i only got into cosplay 3 years ago.
Ah Zhao Wei's Mulan. I really loved that version. facepaint was more for Chinese opera and the Japanese geishas. There is makeup in the past but it was mostly redrawing eyebrows, lipstick and light foundation. the problem is my face looks very manly sometimes. its hard for me to not look like a guy wearing makeup. hopefully i can find some example to make me look girly
I'm sort of manly face too... but I think your face sharp is very nice. it could be both girl and boy characters which is a big advantage as a coser!~
here is some cos photo [link] from my friend Yao. she got a very cool face and mainly doing male characters, but her female character looking is also good. hopefully if is can be a example.
your face isnt as manly as mine. i had some people ask me if i was a guy crossdressing. it's really sad.
ohh she's your friend? i've seen some of her pictures around. she's really good and i wish i had her outfits. my main problem is the makeup. not really good at it
anyway...being a coser is a big challenge for me both mentally and physically ... I think I'm really need practise... I'm not a close friend of that coser, we've hang out for one or twice couple years ago, she's actually working as an comic artist. (jealous right?) Those outfits are amazing! if you can buy costumes from China, it would be much cheaper. (maybe together with some other people so u can share the deliver fee).
comic artist?!?! *super jealous* Actually my family is planning a trip to China maybe next year. We alwayss wanted their traditional outfits and according to my grandma, she said theyre cheap so maybe i can get them soon?
so... you are born American born chinese? (just curious)
even in china it's not easy to get traditional outfits on the street or market, but they are plenty available on netshop, mainly though taobao.com (a b2b web side which successfully kicked Ebay out of china). if you interested in it, you could have a general browser of the samples and price.(just click the photo, and the red number is the price in RMB) 。they usually require you body size and made for you, which is good but need to wait for a while. some shop even take special order, as long as you have clear image of the outfit, they can make it for you.
general cos: [link] Traditional outfits : [link] lolita sort of dress:[link] (please ignore some weird search results...)
they are not always looking as good as the photo, but on the other hand sometime you can find some super deal like this as well [link]
yes, i'm american chinese with a little bit of vietnamese.
i did look around online but they never give u the exact price. thanks for the links. hopefully i can purchase one. but i really have nowhere to wear them except at home to take pictures. i dont really go to conventions
Nice One!
